First principles

Build the thing, not the pitch.

Everyone says they reason from first principles. Almost everyone is reasoning from the last thing they read.

First principles means refusing the analogy. Not “it’s Uber for X”. Not “like this competitor but better”. You take the problem apart until you reach something you can verify yourself, and you rebuild from there — even when what you rebuild looks nothing like what everyone else shipped.

It sounds noble. In practice it is mostly slow, unglamorous, and lonely.

The bill

Reasoning from the ground up means you cannot borrow anyone’s roadmap. It means shipping later than the people assembling existing parts. It means periods where you cannot show anything because the thing you are building has no halfway point that demos well.

And it means being wrong in public, repeatedly, in ways that copying would have spared you.

A pitch can be finished in a week. The thing takes as long as it takes.

How to tell the difference

There is a simple test for whether someone reasoned from first principles or reverse-engineered a narrative: ask what would have to be true for them to be wrong. First-principles thinking produces an answer immediately, because you built the argument and you know where the load-bearing assumptions are.

A pitch has no such answer. It was constructed to be persuasive, not to be tested, and its author has usually never gone looking for the seams.

Receipts over opinions

This is why I keep coming back to the same rule: take advice from people with receipts. Not credentials, not follower counts — receipts. What did you build, what did it cost, what broke, and what did you do at three in the morning when it broke.

We run GAIA on our own company for exactly this reason. Not as a marketing line. Because the fastest way to find out whether your reasoning was sound is to be the first one standing under it when it fails.

The uncomfortable part

First principles will sometimes tell you the boring answer — that the obvious approach was right, that you should use the existing tool, that there is no clever insight here. Taking that answer is the discipline. Inventing complexity to justify the effort is the failure mode, and it is far more common than the opposite.
